Goatee Phil's Musical Odyssey

Goatee Phil’s Musical Odyssey returns to fill your ears with groovy music. You’ll hear gems unearthed from the days before the internet, singers and bands who put the “we” into weird and the “so?” into soulful. This time thought the odyssey will be stopping more frequently at ports from the 21st century so you’ll be as likely to hear the Besnard Lakes as Beefheart, and you’re definitely more likely to hear Cate le Bon than her creepy Uncle Simon. And there’ll be plenty of unsung artists, the ones that will have you searching your pockets for cash, so you can buy everything they’ve ever recorded, and tracks so fantastic you’ll stop what you’re doing just to listen. So tune in as Goatee Phil as he plays you the music you didn’t know you needed to hear.

Musical Odyssey is now sponsored by the Stanley Arms, Portslade’s favourite family pub, the destination pub for all real ale connoisseurs.

If you thought the only thing LaBelle did was Lady Marmalade then you need to listen to this podcast! In it you'll hear tracks from all but one of their SEVEN albums. Labelle's origins lay in the early 60s when two vocal groups came together as Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles. After several American hits - best known "I sold my heart to the junkman" - group member Cindy Birdsong left to join the Supremes. The remaining trio of Patti, Sarah Dash and Nona Hendryx changed direction and became LaBelle.

After three much admired but poorly selling albums they toured with the Rolling Stones, got signed to Epic and released "Nightbirds", a top selling album that spawned the international hit "Lady Marmalade". They never managed to repeat the success of that track even though all their albums contain stellar music. Listen to the Odyssey and ask yourself the question - why is "Lady Marmalade" the only LaBelle track that anybody remembers?
